Why Taking Time Off Matters for Barbers
As a self-employed barber, taking time off can feel like a luxury you can’t afford. The guilt of sacrificing income and letting clients down often overshadows the need for rest (plus an ice cold beverage in the sun). However, stepping away from the chair at is essential—not just for your well-being, but for your craft.
The national average holiday allowance is 28 days per year, and while it may seem unrealistic to match that, aiming for even a portion of this can have profound benefits. Regular breaks reduce burnout, improve focus, replenish inspiration and allow you to return to work with renewed creativity. When you’re well-rested, you’re more productive, attentive, and capable of delivering the haircuts and experience your clients love.
Ignoring the need for time off can lead to physical and mental exhaustion. It can get rough. Long hours on your feet and constant focus on perfection take their toll. Scheduling breaks, even short ones, improves your overall health and helps maintain the passion that got you into the industry in the first place.
Remember, taking time off isn’t selfish—it’s self-preservation. Your clients will appreciate the energy and skill you bring back after a proper rest. By prioritizing your health, you’re not just building a career; you’re building longevity in an industry you love.
This month is my Birthday and I’m sticking to my now annual tradition of taking the full week off and going abroad with my nearest and dearest. I love my job and I’m proud to be full time and fully booked at Turner’s Barbershop - but I cannot wait to go on holiday.
Book the flight. Pack the bag. Enjoy the time off and come back ready to rock and roll.
